Comments about Tamron Autofocus 17-50/ 2.8 XR DI II For Canon:
This is pretty much the perfect low-cost primary zoom lens for shooting DSLR video on the run. You can look up comprehensive comparisons to the image quality of similarly priced (and some much more expensive) lenses, but basically this lens will not let you down and it is extraordinarily cheap.
The only downsides are the non-standard 67mm filter size (the VC version of this lens is 72mm though, for some reason), the plasticy construction (though it's still got some heft to it), the sticky zoom ring, and some loss of sharpness at the edges when shooting stills (you'll never notice it in video mode though). Oh, also, the lens breathes very slightly, so it may not be ideal for tightly controlled shoots. Still, none of those problems are significant enough to keep me from using this lens: the only EOS lenses I'd use which really "best" the Tamron at this purpose cost 3 to 4 times as much.
I would absolutely recommend this lens to anyone shooting DSLR video on a budget -- hell, my team uses two of them.

I love this lens. On my 40d it has accurate focus and great color. I love the sharpness and its F2;8 so it works well in low light.

Comments about Tamron Autofocus 17-50/ 2.8 XR DI II For Canon:
I bought this lens to replace the 18-55 canon kit lens. Although the canon lens did rate pretty good on optics, it is a very soft build. The Tamron seems a bit better optically and far more durable for the long run.
