Comments about Tamron 17-50 AF 2.8 XR Di II LD Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Nikon AF:

I was using the Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G with my D200 before I got this lens. I wanted something with similar range but fast, yet affordable. This lens fit the ticket perfectly, and after using it for a few weeks with my D200, I have never looked back since.

At first though there were a few issues keeping the lens communicating with the body, but after twisting the lens back and forth on the mount while holding the release in (like many have suggested), the lens does not have any autofocus or communication issues.

In terms of image quality, this lens certainly outperforms my old 18-55mm, as well as the bokeh being quite pleasant. Photos that I have taken are very sharp even wide open (which is the way I like to shoot).

The autofocus speed isn't as fast as AF-S but the focus speed should be no problem for most people. I shoot a lot of railroad and transit photos and this lens has no problem tracking the LIRR going by at 80mph.

I would definitely recommend this lens to anyone looking for a cost-effective upgrade for their Nikkor kit lens.

(Note: I have the second revision of this model with the built-in focus motor)
