Comments about Nikon SB-400 AF Speedlight:

This is a great flash. I've always used Canon products but just recently purchased the Nikon d90. This flash works great for bouncing light off ceilings (flash can be adjusted to point straight up at 90 degrees.) for indoor shots. I'd suggest going with this flash over the SB 600 or 900 just for the fact of those ones are too big and bulky. I leave the SB 400 attached to my camera all the time. It's more than adequate for everything I've used it for. Google "bounce photography" It's an important technique that every photographer should know. The on board flashes won't work with bounce photography but the SB 400 will.

works like a charm... good size...
By Ray DVerified Purchaser from jersey city, nj on 11/1/2009

Cons:
Hard to use for portrait
Best Uses:
Fill Flash, General Use
Describe Yourself:
Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Nikon SB-400 AF Speedlight:

for the money and size, this is perfect. works excellent for the bounce off of the ceiling indirect lighting in smaller locations. i don't do weddings and rarely in big reception halls with ceilings 15feet or greater...

i use this with a d90 and 18-105/3.5-5.6 setup and works awesome. pictures are way better than the pop up flash as it can bounce off of the ceiling. for portrait shots i have to get more creative with what to bounce off of. agreed, it does not work very well but for the size/flexibility/weight/cost, it is a perfect fit for my use and would definitely recommend to anyone else whom is a photographer by hobby and want that professional look without all the setup/bulkiness head ache.

there are plenty of other/mixed review of this flash although it is because the expectation is too high. the design is not to be a full function flash for wedding photography or other settings in large spaces. it is what it is and a very good buy.

Negatives offset benefits
By DennisVerified Purchaser from Philadelphia on 3/16/2009
Pros:
Easy To Use, Fast Recycling, Saves camera battery
Best Uses:
Fill Flash, Portraits
Describe Yourself:
Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Nikon SB-400 AF Speedlight:

The size is great. It eliminates red eye. It is very unintrusive and can be left on the camera even when it is not needed. The LED indicator is not useful at all except to tell you the flash is ready. Needs a battery life indicator. I use it with rechargeables and carry a spare set becuase it just goes dead and that's how you know batteries need recharge or replacement. Better than the pop up flash but not by much. It does extend the camera battery life when shooting a lot of flash pics. Better for a casual user. I will be purchasing the SB600 and wish I had bought it in the first place.

Comments about Nikon SB-400 AF Speedlight:

This little flash is perfect for me. I'm new to DSLR. Received a D90 for Xmas that I'm loving. I wanted a flash I could take with me to parties ad family gatherings that would make my people shots look better. I couldn't be happier. I know the SB-600 & 800 will do the same and much more but the 400 is all I need at this time. Maybe later I will find a need for much more.

Comments about Nikon SB-400 AF Speedlight:

This is a great choice for beginners and casual photographers looking to upgrade from the built-in flash without hurting their wallet. It's a perfect match for my D40, and just as portable: this tiny unit in its well-fitted pouch fits into the camera top loading mini-bag!Pros: again, very compact; strong, uniform lighting for indoor shots; vertical tilt for bounce flash (60, 75 and 90 degrees); very simple to operate, unit only has an on/off button (more controls through the D40 menus); runs on 2 standard AA-batteries; quick recharge.Notable cons: no red AF illuminator so you'll have to stick with the camera built-in (somewhat annoying) white light; no sideways tilt, you'll need a diffuser, the Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce ($15) fits perfectly and is just as compact.Bottom line: get this if you need a no-hassle, high-quality, compact flash with bounce feature for under $100. If sideways tilt, AF assist, and additional features/controls matter, you'll have to make the leap to the SB-600 or beyond.

Comments about Nikon SB-400 AF Speedlight:

I like how compact this Speedlight is compare to the SB-600, 800, 900. But it does lack power compared to the other three. If you can spend $70 more then get the SB-600. It does offer better lighting and power but a little bulky for my used. This would be a great travel companion if you don't want to carry too much equipment. [...]

Comments about Nikon SB-400 AF Speedlight:

Indoor shots look good so far[three weeks use]. I bought this for D40...trying to eliminate shadows indoor. Swivel head makes it worthwhile, probably wouldn't have bought it without that feature. D40 flash is not all that bad and almost all programs fix red eye. What I don't like is there is no way to fix it to strap.....its so small it would be ideal to carry it on strap and be ready to shoot indoors. Must carry it in pocket or bag....its a small complaint but would have been nice feature to have. Very nice case included except for comment.

The SB-400 AF Speedlight by Nikon does the job. I never intended to use it for wedding photography, but once pressed into service, it did just fine.

Just be sure to have lots of extra double A batteries in your camera bag. The unit does suck juice and when the recycle hits more than 5 seconds it's time to change batteries.
