If you don't have an external speedlight for your DSLR, you need one.This light will give you better photos with less, or no, shadows. Using it off camera will take your photos to the next level. I am ordering a second one to go even further. I use mine with a softlighter to diffuse the light for portraits.

Before purchasing 2 of these I purchased 2 SB-900's and, although the SB-900's are amazing, you can purchase 4 SB-600's for the price of 2 SB-900's. That, to me, is a selling point on its own. If you are on a budget I highly recommend purchasing SB600's; they work just as well as the SB-900's if you are just shooting portraits in an indoor setting.

I use this flash every time I iurn on my D40 DSLR. The built in flash works good, but the lighting you get with the SB-600 is AWSOME! Having the flash off of the camera allows for great and creative lighting.

DO NOT buy an off brand flash for your Nikon. I purchased one and it performed terribly compared to the SB-600. I compared with a friends SB-600 and sent it back immediately.

My 17 month old daughter looks great every time I take her photo with this flash.

One last big pro for this flash is that it has its own power supply. This allows you to take way more shots with the camera before the battery gives out. The camera battery only has to power the shutter, display and storage cards, not the high energy flash.

get the diffuser. Its an easy fix when you are too close and don't have time to fiddle with settings, just put the diffuser over the flash and the tones are natural.

This flash works very well with the D90 and the output is very pleasant when used with a bounce card or walls, ceiling. The wireless feature works wonderfully with the camera. However, the head can only rotate 90 to the right and sometimes you need to have it go more than that. But this is the only minus, I love this flash so far.

I bought this Nikon SB-600 flash, but the price is a bit high, if I compare the price of Nikon SB-600 to the price of the Metz 48 AF-1. Metz is also a name brand, and its flash, Metz 48 AF-1, has more functions at the same price. Also Metz flash is software upgradable via mini-USB port. Probably because this is my first flash for DSLR, so I want to stick with Nikon brand first.

I use this light primarily as a hair/background light and general fill flash. It is fairly easy to use and works well with the Nikon system and compliments the more powerful sb-900 units. It functions well as a stand-alone or slave to the Nikon cameras and commanders. The only downside is that the menu options are not very intuitive. Once learned, it does its work perfectly.

In expanding my portfolio, I recently attended a wedding photography workshop (I'm mostly accustomed to outdoor/nature) and needed a hotshoe flash for my D300. Although my experience with interior lighting is limited, the SB600 made it easy to look like I knew what I was doing. It didn't take much effort to customize the settings for the application and fast paced shooting was not hindered by recycle time. And I have the additional advantage of already having a slave when I'm ready to add a master flash.

[...]Regarding the SB-600 itself, I'm upgrading from the SB-400 because I needed more power, greater rotation flexibility (e.g. if I wanted to take a shot in portrait mode), and I wanted to be able to use a Gary Fong diffuser. So far, I'm loving the power of the SB-600 and the ability to rotate it in any direction I need. I have nowhere near the knowledge to fiddle with the various settings (yet) but in default mode, it does everything I need. At least one reviewer (kenrockwell [dot]com) states that most people won't need more flash than this (such as the SB-800 or 900).Battery life is excellent, using 2900 mAh NiMH rechargeable batteries. Common sense says you want to have a at least 1 set of spares handy, though, if you'll be using the flash a lot.Great buy.

The SB 600 is the right product at the right price to permit on camera or wireless flash. Nikon did it right with the CLS system, permitting the use of multiple flash units to satisfy almost any lighting requirement.

Although this unit is made in China it appears to have the same build quality as its big brothers.
Only having just received the unit I have yet to fully put it through its paces.
Although it works reasonably well in a multi-flash setup there are two restrictions.
First is the placement of the infrared sensor with the potential for restricting the placement of the flash.
The second is the lack of a light sensitive trigger, thereby requiring it to be used with the Nikon proprietary system. These are the reasons for only four stars.
Incidentally I purchased two of these units from Abe's and providing how well they work in the field may secure more.

Works great with the D90. Commander mode is excellent. Quality pictures most of the time. Other times it's me. NiMh batteries last a long time. Very powerful. I use it a lot in the home studio. Soft box, umbrella reflector and shoot thru's, main light, hair light, background - works great.

I had a SB-800 it works great in large spaces,I needed 2 more flashes for off camera shooting.I purchased 2 SB-600's cheaper then purchasing 1 sb-800.They do 90% of what an 800 does. There perfect for use on light stands.They are easier to use then the 800.

The 600 really is everything you need, except for the fact that it has no optical slave built in. That is my only qualm with this light. I bought the SB-600 for my Nikon D-50 because I was tired of having crazy shadows behind my kids pictures. This definately did the trick, I went with the 600 over the 400 because I like to take pictures in portrait and landscape, and the 600 swivels so I could still do that easily. It does make the camera much heavier, but the picture quality is SO much better it is worth it. Everyone has such a warmer glow with this flash than the built in. I would highly recommend this flash.

The SB-600 is a great flash for indoor and portrait photography. It will also do the job as fill flash in scenic and most outdoor situations. It is not as powerful and feature packed as the SB-800 and 900 but at almost half the price from the closest one it is still the best deal in my mind. The manual is weak in information and if you want to use it in a multiple flash wireless setting it can be a little frustrating at first; however, it does work and once you figure it out is a great match for the D80 and above (it will also work with the D70 but that one is being phased out). I own two and I am happy with them.

Not only does this unit provide excellent light source, it also assist in dim light autofocus. You will notice that the camera will focus much faster when using this unit. I recommend getting a STO-FEN Omni bounce diffuser on this unit. It works the same way as the diffuser that comes with the more expensive SB-800. If you are using this unit on a D40/60/70/80/90, the unit seem to perform best when the camera is set to "P" mode rather than auto mode.

Probably it would be good to have a built-in bouncer (like a small white card), but you can buy variety of those for your exact needs.

The SB-600 is a flashlight of the latest technology.There is no over- or underexposure anymore. Compared to my old one it is easy to use on my Nikon D300 and is always getting it right. Actually it's a nobrainer as long as you do general photography inside and outside.
In big rooms you just change the camera setting from ASA 200 to ASA 400 to be sure to have enough light.
Since I own it now for less than a month I still want to test it under specific lighting situations like close ups. I'm optimistic that the SB-600 is handling these challenges as easy as the other stuff.

The SB600 Nikon Flash is a great addition to my photography tools. It automatically calibrates for each and ever shot giving the subject the correct amount of light from closeups to distant shots. It did amazing on a 40-50 foot shot with my Nikon D50 on halloween evening which surprised me with the ability to throw that much light so far. Extremly happy I purchased the SB600.

The SB600 keeps up with My D80 when I shoot multiple shots in RAW......for awhile, than it will miss one or two before the recycle is fully charged. With fresh batteries, its recycle time is great, but if you are shooting lots of shots that require a flash, carry lots of extra batteries.
I use rechargeable batteries and they seem to loose power faster than non rechargeable ones.
I would like to have seen the extra battery slot that the SB800 has.
It does a remarkable job of lighting just what you want if you understand how to use it, which I am still learning how to do.
One of the most outstanding features I find with it is if you have it in TTL mode only, you will not get any blown out hot spots of peoples faces, it lights up what you are shooting without blowing out the shot, and that saves lots and lots of shots.
I would recommend this flash to any Nikon SLR user, it is a medium priced flash that holds up well, just carry lots of batteries.

The draw back of this unit is that you can't connect any outside power source, it is a stand alone unit.

This is an excellent flash. I strongly suggest storing the flash unit in its provided case. This is my second flash. The first was broken due to not properly storing and the sensor became cracked and damaged. This caused the flash not to work properly. I had the flash in my camera case and flash unit came in contact with the side of the camera body. The force and no protection caused the sensor cover to become damaged. It was cheaper to replace than have repaired.

This flash is very versatile. Works very well in diverse lighting situations. I also use it off camera with the SC-28 TTL remote cord to improve the lighting effect and subject texture, good investment. I used this when I took my first pictures with a new D40X. I found it quick to set up and use. No complications whatsoever. Pictures all came out perfect. No hot spots or overflash/underflash. I find the battery life to be very good. I see no way Nikon can improve it!

Use for shooting live performances - very fast! Took awhile to learn how/when to use bounce. Great product.
