If you are looking to soften the harsh shadows from your primary flash, and don't have the need and $$$ for a sophisticated system, this is your option. Just mount the flash on a second tripod and it fires away with your primary.
If you are however looking for a primary flash, there are smarter options out there that coordinate with your camera.

WhenI mounted the flash on the hot shoe, my camera started making popping noises and the flash started firing on it"s own. I shutdown the camera and removed the flash. I had to restart the camera three times before it returned to a working mode.
