50D with Battery Grip is heavier than Rebel XT with grip, but its balance is superb, making it easy to hold and position.

Debated between 50D and 7D. I'm not a Pro, so decided to buy the 50D and use the extra $$$ for traveling.

This model felt 'right' from Day-One. It has been a fairly easy transition from the Rebel - and seems a lot easier to change settings.

I use my camera nearly every day and the 50D is my most relieable camera no matter what the conditions may be. I shoot a lot of fast action sports...rodeos, ropings, football, baseball, basketball and so forth, and it never fails to live up to my expectations and achieve what I need the camera to do each time. I love tinkering with the speed settings and shutters, ISO's, etc to see what I can get that I haven't been able to with my other cameras. I am always looking for that one-in-a-million shot!!!!!

Comments about Canon EOS-50D SLR Digital Camera Body:

I am somewhere in between Photo Enthusiast and Semi-Pro photographer. I am taking classes and I was using my Canon Xti, which was a great first camera. However, I was having issues with low light and my 24-105L lens was a bit ackward on it. I made the jump to the Canon 50d and I love it! I have not looked back since. While it is a bit heavier than my Xti, my 24-105 lens is no longer weighing my camera down!

I like the intuitive menue and control access. I shoot only in manual and can change paramaters easily with the 50D. I also got this to have a bigger LCD, for instant evaluation. The Kelvin scale for white balance offers greater choice.
If only it were lighter, of course that can be said of the good lenses as well.Where are my bar-bells?

Comments about Canon EOS-50D SLR Digital Camera Body:

Really not 'heavy' if you are upgrading from the 30D...can see it as an issue for upgrades from the Rebel line. Easy to use, intuitive menu, superb resolution. Love the raw & jpg option - though it eats a lot of memory - plan for extra memory cards and hard drive space. Pics with little noise at high ISO helps offset the low light issues a bit. Sensor cleaning a huge plus in upgrading!!

Comments about Canon EOS-50D SLR Digital Camera Body:

Read the manual carefully to fully utilize the camera to its potential. Although some parts of the manual were unclear and it took some experimenting with the camera. The on/off button seems very awkward to me. In a hurry it takes too much time for me to turn the button. I suppose if it were a push button, the camera might be too easily turned on/off accidentally? My only complaint. I have taken about 3 weeks (and many photos) and my conclusion is ... fabulous camera. I purchased the camera body only and added the 24-105mm lens. The extended eyepiece is a must and spare batteries. I plan on adding a zoom lens in the future to complete the package. I have snapped potraits, scenery, closeups and sports photos. All have been extremely impressive. Live view gets some getting use to, but once you master the settings and light good results. I originally decided on this camera for its speed and price range. Action shots seem to be the main type of photos I take and this camera lives up to the task. Bull riding, gymnastics, dog running and even firworks at night, not one bad image! My 13 year old has even used this camera and has had no difficulty in working the controls. The weight did get heavy for her, but I have no problem. Keep the neck strap on for a break in between shots.

Comments about Canon EOS-50D SLR Digital Camera Body:

I had Canon Digital Rebel for nearly 6years and took thousands of shots across the US while travelling for work. It was my first DSLR, though I had point and shoots before. I gained knowledge and experience through trial and error, reading, using guides and such. I was preparing to order an upgraded DSLR when my Digital Rebel failed (understand this camera was carried everywhere!).

I chose to stay with Canon because I am already a Canon user and had *some* Canon equipment, but I did give the Nikon D300 very serious consideration. The 50D is the highest level prosumer Canon DSLR available and is VERY WELL featured. The 500D is not yet available and is more of an amatuer level camera. I found myself bordering on a paid photographer or just enthusiast, so I went the 50D route.

I have had the 50D for 3 weeks now and very pleased with the camera overall. I feel my decision was the right one and have not had a single regret! I have also purchased a highly recommended Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 lens and the images captured are astounding! The AI Servo continuous focus mode is impressive and keeps the action shots of my kids in sharp focus, especially after applying micro adjustment to the compensate for focus accuracy with my lenses.

Even though I had DSLR experience, I have spent a great deal of time getting intimately familiar with every aspect and control of this camera. This has paid off with some very high quality shots. And having immediate control with well laid out controls and on screen menus aalow me to quickly adjust to changing conditions.

If you are even slightly more interested than just photography as a hobby, step up to the 50D and you will be very pleased! Unless you have the budget for something like the 5D Mark II. Just be sure to figure in a high quality lens to take advantage of of the 50Ds 15 megapixel sensor!

Comments about Canon EOS-50D SLR Digital Camera Body:

I upgraded from the Canon EOS Digital Rebel, and so far I am pretty happy. The 50-D is a lot quieter and faster, which makes nature photography easier. It also works a lot better with some of the new memory cards; the Rebel was extremely slow with a 4 GB card. The ISO levels allow much better night-time photography and even the flash is a significant improvement. The prospect of 3 different RAW settings is also very exciting. I have noticed, however, that my images tend to be a lot darker with the 50-D. The LCD screen also attracts much more dust, although makes reviewing much more effective. The controls are a lot more complex, and I am not thrilled with the knob that rotates in 8 directions. With practice though, I think just about anyone can master the camera.

Comments about Canon EOS-50D SLR Digital Camera Body:

I am by no means a professional photographer but Canon equipment and the 50D in particular certainly give me the opportunity to come close in terms of photo quality. The 50D definitely meets my expectations for mid- to upper- range camera equipment, most notably easy to use under varying conditions and adaptable to a wide range of applications. It is comfortable and well balanced even with larger zooms.

Cons:
Heavy, Poor In Low Light
Best Uses:
Fun
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Canon EOS-50D SLR Digital Camera Body:

The construction of this camera is great and a significant upgrade from my original digital rebel. I have not used it significantly but have noticed that low light conditions, even with a low ISO and fast lens turn out extremely grainy. I tried adjusting the amound of filtering and that didnt seem to help. I took the same picture with the same lens (a good canon lens with IS) with the Digital Rebel and they turned out much better. I am not sure if I approve of the new sensor/processor combo. I am going to take a few outdoor high light images to see if they are any better. If not, it may have to be returned.

Comments about Canon EOS-50D SLR Digital Camera Body:

The 50D works as expected. It has slightly more noise than the 30D or 40D at low to medium ISO speeds (at full 15.1 Mpix resolution) but remains usable up to ISO 6400. The H2 speed (12800) is usable only if the RAW files are processed using DPP at maximum noise reduction settings (not the default settings) and that results in significant resolution loss. The "live view" feature is handy when using a tripod, but it does result in very slow auto focus, so manual focus is often a better choice. Live view also does deplete the battery much faster than using the reflex viewer. Even though the 50D can use UDMA CF cards for a maximum number of sustained rapid shots, it also works fine with older, slower cards.
Please be aware that the 50D "CR2" RAW file format is different than other Canon "CR2" file formats, so your RAW converter will probably need to be upgraded. I've gotten excellent results with DXO Pro 5.3.1, Aperture 2.1.2 and the supplied Canon DPP 3.5.0 converters. Of course, if you just shoot jpegs, this is of no concern.

I very much enjoy the automatic side of this camera, while playing with the manual side!! the smplicity and ease of taking pictures is great. I also bought the 18-200mm Wide angle zoom and have not had to change lens yet.

Comments about Canon EOS-50D SLR Digital Camera Body:

What a great upgrade from the 20D. Even though I had just bought the 20D, the new features are very desirable. The cost to upgrade is well worth it.
Great addition of features, specially menu options make it so much easier to use. Startup and capture are as fast as ever. The burst speed is maintained even with nearly twice the data being saved.
I still have to take a lot of pictures to compare the quality, but I am sure I will be pleasantly surprised. +, the extra pixels mean I can crop smaller and maintain quality....

Comments about Canon EOS-50D SLR Digital Camera Body:

This is a wonderful camera body and an absolutely great upgrade from the 30D. I am impressed with so many aspects of this camera. I highly recommend it. I was going to get the 40D but then when I saw the 50D and read all the reviews I decided to just go with the 50D and I am so very glad that I did. I have been a Canon user for years and with each upgrade they get better and better. I must say that this is probably as close to a professional camera as you can get for the price.

Comments about Canon EOS-50D SLR Digital Camera Body:

This is an excellent, feature rich camera. The larger screen makes it a lot easier to critique your pictures on the spot. Battery life is excellent! Mini-HDMI is great for viewing high def pictures on TV without distortion. This is not an entry level camera for someone who just wants to point and shoot. However, it is a great camera for the photo enthusiast.
