Comments about NIKON D40 6.1 Megapixel Digital SLR Camera Body (Body Only):

all around a great camera...easy to use lots of features and great images...the only cons I have would be no manual control of F stops, no manual control of shutter speed and no light meter. These three items are a big concern when in manual mode and took some getting used to, I came from a fully manuual camera.

Comments about NIKON D40 6.1 Megapixel Digital SLR Camera Body (Body Only):

I needed a second camera for my new wide-angle lens and was torn between buying a D90 and putting my 18:200 lens on it and my wide angle on my D80. A friend suggested that was one way to go but since it was a second camera, I should consider getting a lighter body.
Then two women discussing their D40s and the advantage of its light weight turned me around. I haven't used it extensively yet but so far so good. One thing that's good about the camera is that it's not a megapixel giant, giving me plenty of room on my 2gb card for both jpegs and raw.
Overall, I would recommend the D40 as a second camera or as a good starter camera. When weight matters, the D40 counts.
