Comments about Nikon D40 6.1 Megapixel SLR Digital Camera W/ 18-55mm lens (non-VR):

Probably one of the best deals on an SLR that you can get. Don't be put off by the 6MP sensor, unless you're looking for exceptionally large prints. Included kit lens is great, extremely sharp, and well made. I highly recommend it. Just be careful, and note that autofocus only works with certain lenses.

It's great 'first' DSLR. Very easy to use at the same time gives pretty descent controls over exposure settings. Comes with preset options for novice and allows fully customizations as you go along. [...]trust me neither additional battery nor faster card is required. D40's internal buffer can hold upto 100 fine JPEGs before writing to card so even slowest card on market will do fine.

This is not great camera for night shots so be careful.Otherwise its great.
Recently I took it to Las Vegas and wanted to take the picture of the city from 118th floor, but every shot taken was flop.I was disappointed but I did compromise with great shots taken during day lights.

Great camera. Wonderful value. Better kit lens than from other brands. Impressive image quality and high ISO performance. The only issue I have with this camera is the lack of an internal motor. Therefor, it is unable to use many of the older (cheaper) lens. This will not be an issue for some unless you expect to really get into photography and use specializes lens. I can't fault the camera though since I knew about the lack of this feature before buying. Overall this is an excellent camera and the only quality camera that is this cheap.

Now I have a camera that I am so proud of because it takes great pictures, and is easy for me to use in my old age. Even with a little bit of a hand tremor, the sutter is fast enough to still make my pictures sharp! I love it !

Comments about Nikon D40 6.1 Megapixel SLR Digital Camera W/ 18-55mm lens (non-VR):

It was very easy to learn to use this camera. The controls are very intuitive, with easy image deletion and a no-flash setting I love. It takes great photos in low-light conditions, with few exceptions. It's especially quick with a high-speed photo card. The only drawback is that it's a slightly large camera, but given the bulkiness of higher-numbered cameras in the D series, that's not a big issue. I really love this camera and highly recommend it!

Comments about Nikon D40 6.1 Megapixel SLR Digital Camera W/ 18-55mm lens (non-VR):

I mainly use it with the nikkor 70-200mm, the light-wight of D40 makes it easier to carry and shoot. They are well-balanced if you hold the tripod foot.
D40 does have inferior IQ than those with higher MPs if you don't pixel-peeping, but it's nice high-ISO performance(Yep, probably better than any DX format(excluding the CMOS ones like D300/D90) now) is definitely a nice compensate for that which combined with the VR and fast aperture of the lens making this combo shines in the low-light in-doors situation.

It is not flaw-less though, the only 3 area AF and very-limited controls will be bothersome if you're already used to pro/semi-pro bodies.

At last, a small tip for D40, when playback, you press the "Ok", choose the one named color what what(sorry I can't remember it's actual name),and "Ok" again, you can see the 3 channel histogram as well as make adjustment to it on-the-fly.

Comments about Nikon D40 6.1 Megapixel SLR Digital Camera W/ 18-55mm lens (non-VR):

This is my first SLR and I bought it mainly for travel. It came highly recommended by some of my friends who do photography for a living.

So far I've used it on a recent trip to Japan. I never read the instructions manual, the menu layout was pretty intuitive. It was easy to navigate, and the big bright LCD displayed all the relevant information. The one thing I really liked about this camera was the size and weight. It is pretty compact for an SLR, a plus when traveling.

Took pictures of various landscapes, portraits, random stuff I found interesting, etc. They all came out looking great. All shots were on the kit lens. The AF was pretty simple to adjust. I shot pretty much everything in P-mode. If I had to hand the camera to someone else to snap a picture, I would turn it to Auto. Those came out great too.

I don't really need 12MP but some people might.
I don't have any other cons for this camera. The build quality is excellent and the thing just feels great in my hands. For the price, I don't think you can get an SLR that is more newbie friendly and takes better pictures.

A capable camera that will capture great photos.

It will mount and use older Nikon NAI, AI and AIS manual focus lenses; although separate light metering is necessary.

Whether it is a camping trail, a rainy day, a soccer game or a family occasion, the D40 is there for you to shoot great photographs. It is on the lighter side (you could shoot with 1 hand) but I believe it has been built with the amateur DSLR user in mind. All in all, a great camera to have.

This is my first SLR camera and after much research and advice I bought this camera and can't be more happy. I was debating between Canon Rebel and Nikon D40 as I don't want to spent too much money, I am glad I bought this one. I take my infant dughters picture (indoor) and they turn out great pictures with enough lighting and details. Very satisfied.

Comments about Nikon D40 6.1 Megapixel SLR Digital Camera W/ 18-55mm lens (non-VR):

If you are looking to take a plunge into the world of D-SLR photography and all you have used in your entire life is a basic point and shoot, then start off with this wonderful Nikon. Although its not big on features, it has got enough preset modes and plenty of manual controls to tinker with. The grip is solid and the build is sturdy (in fact i felt its got a better build than the Canon rebel XS). The 6.1MP sensor is more than enough, unless you are looking at printing some really big posters (you are looking for the wrong model if thats the case! ). The pictures are sharp and can give many expensive models with bigger sensors a run for their money.

One quirk that i must mention is the lack of VR (vibration reduction). Although its not a big deal for most of us, not all of them have steady hands to take those perfect shots. This is especially the case in harsh weather conditions like severe snow, when its impossible to control your shiver or when are dealing with slow shutter speeds. Of course you can upgrade to a VR enabled lens, but i would have loved it if Nikon had replaced the default 18-55mm lens with a VR enabled one.

There are many "bargains" out there, be careful. Make sure you get a US warranty, then you are not pressured into buying smething you really did not want. I really appreciate the way Abe's treats their customers, maybe that is why they are rated so well. Many companies make false claims about their ratings, Go to BBB web sight and check out these other companies Most, stay away. [...]

This is really an excellent buy for me as an entry level DSLR camera. Before this i was point and shoot user. After getting this camera it took a while for me to learn all the settings but it was expected as i was a novice DSLR user. But later the level of satisfaction has reached very high with use of this camera as it never disappoints me. You can see some of my pics attached here.

Comments about Nikon D40 6.1 Megapixel SLR Digital Camera W/ 18-55mm lens (non-VR):

Hi All,

I bought this D40 6.1 Megapixel for a friend of mine and he is too happy with it. I had a very precise idea of his requirements and the camera fitted right in.

6.1 MP is good enough if you wish to print images in 11X17. Also it doesn't allows you to crop a picture and enlarge it.

Apart from this, it has a great lens giving out fine results and the built in flash is FAST and good enough for closed Indore.

It also has various functions if you are an intermediate photographer.

This is really Value for Money !

Thanks !
Akki

Nikon's training DVD that accompanied camera's purchase @ Abe's, helped my wife to quickly understand controls on the camera. The D40 is just perfect for everyday shots and also great on vacation trips: great pictures (day lite or at night)+ small size. I have purchased 18-200mm lens and now am ready for any shot, whether it's close or far away.

Comments about Nikon D40 6.1 Megapixel SLR Digital Camera W/ 18-55mm lens (non-VR):

This is a nice SLR camera with out standing picture quality. You would definitely get more than what you paid for. I highly recommend this camera to any one who don't mind to pay little more than the regular digital cameras. The only thing I don't like in this camera is zoom in option. It has only 3x zoom which is far less than regular digital cameras. So technically they are forcing you to buy their expensive auto zoom lens.
