Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:

Seeing the difference between the D90 which is touted to have hign iso noise reduction and the D700 is amazing. It will move the quality of your low light photography into another dimension. I could not imagine shooting anything above 1000 iso on the D90 but I am very comfortable when I need that extra light shooting at 4000 on the D700.

The better build quality and design is also very noticable in this body, good ergonomics, and nice additional features.

Whats not to like, the price hurts a bit, but its worth every penny and would buy it even if it cost more.

Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:

The D700 is the most advanced camera I have used. Tests that I did in available light show that ISO's of up to 3200 are nearly noise free with 6400 and even 12,800 usable. The pop-up flash makes a great commander for the Nikon CLS lighting system. Images from this camera are sharp and the color is great. 14 bit RAW captures are a plus. This is a great portrait and event camera but it has the capability of handling action. The highlight clipping warning seems a bit inaccurate, however, as it will flash even with a perfect exposure.

The full frame sensor with large pixel pitch provides for superb resolution, and allows for moderately high ISO (800) that is very good quality. I shoot from a kayak a lot, and this is the combination I have needed. Prints of 10" x 15" are coming out with fine detail rendered clearly.

This camera is great for low light shooting. Shoot with confidence in low light knowing you can crank up the ISO and still get low noise on your photos. I bought this camera so I could shoot youth football at night. My D300 just wasn't cutting it when I had to crank up the ISO.

Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:

I upgraded to this after using the D90 for a month... the D90 is a fantastic camera for it's league, but I just wasn't getting the low light performance I expected. I prefer to shoot without flash in low light conditions (restaurant, bar, etc) so this was one reason keeping me from being completely happy. My friends all had the D700 so after a very fun month with the D90 I bit the bullet to upgrade. My fiance said that the frowns she used to see from my D90 low light pics were now replaced by smiles. Nikon has put together a true winner of a prosumer camera putting the capabilities of a pro sensor into a more manageable package.

If I had to say there was a negative it's just the lack of video... but I never once used the video capabilities of the D90 when I had it so it wasn't a huge deal. The MP count is lower compared to the Canon 5D Mark II however I don't primarily shoot in situations where I need to crop much or blow a pic up to oblivion so it wasn't an advantage for me. I've always preferred Nikon ergonomics over the Canon, but beyond that the D700 just is a perfect package for me.

Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:

This is an outstanding tool!!! Attach a high quality lens, and you can create art masterpieces with this camera. It is well built and rugged. Its high ISO performance is exceptional!! Although it is only a 12.1 megapixel camera, the sensor's larger pixel size (double that of most cameras) make for beautiful pictures with very low noise. The camera controls are easy to use, but, this camera is not for the novice. If you are considering purchasing the D700 you should have a working knowledge of photographic principals. You do not have to be Albert Einstein to use this camera, but, you should have a good understanding and experience between the relationship of ISO, Aperture, and Speed settings. If you have a solid grounding in these photographic principles, then you are going to love the D700!! Only drawback is the D700 is a little weighty. I recommend you bring a tripod along, if you plan to do a lot of photo shooting in a single setting. If you want a high end digital SLR then the D700 won't disappoint you for the money!!

Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:

This camera is just the best camera I've ever used. I started off with a D80, and move to a D2x. While the D2x is a great camera, The D700 surpasses it in versatility. Higher ISO, just as fast frame rate, and best of all the AF is second to none.

I use this camera mostly for studio work, and street photography. It does it's job better than any camera I've ever own and I really cannot say there is a better camera out there for the money.

I just purchased the D700 with the 14-24 mm lens from abes of maine. [...] I have used the camera when traveling. I visited Las Vegas, and the images this camera is capable of capturing is, to put it quite simply, brilliant!! The camera seems rather intimidating at first, but one quick read through the manual, and a few clips on youtube to address different photo options, the camera is quite simple to use. It is a massive camera with massive features, and a plethora of settings, all add to the overall magnificence of being a nikon. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way!

Very well priced at Abe's. Full frame sensor for those looking to switch from film or simply interested in the feature. Very well placed controls compared to the Mark II. The biggest gripe for most would be the price but the more relevant gripe is the 95% viewfinder. I recommend renting the models you are considering prior to purchasing and trying out the different lenses.

Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:

This is a great camera for action in low light. Sturdy, professional build, with weather sealing makes for confidence in any type of critical situation. The full frame sensor gives sharp, detailed pictures, and the not-too-aggressive AA filter doesn't turn details into mush. However, the FF sensor is prone to vignetting (easily corrected on post), and the sensor does attract dust. Over all, a fine instrument for exceptional work.

The Full Frame choice for Nikon

Cons:
Abrupt shutter, Glitchy, Loud, Poor low light focusing
Best Uses:
Art, Fun, Photojournalism, Portraits
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:

This seems like the best choice if you want to shoot fullframe(FX) format, and you like Nikon FX lenses. It's comparable to the Canon's EOS 5D Mk II. And much affordable than D3.
It does well in low light up to ISO 1600, capable going to 6400, but gets quite grainy.
If you have a bright 50mm you can shoot almost anything flashless. It's not for shooting with DX lenses. I don't recommend manual lens either due to difficulty in focusing by sight.
The autofocus, and shutter release can be glitchy sometimes. The focusing screen is a bit dark for focusing in dim places. The other annoying thing is that D700 depends on bright white AF light for focusing... it can ruin the moment because of this bright light flashing at your subject in the dark. External flash is highly recommended, if you plan on using a flash.

This camera paired up with AF-s lens seems to do well in terms of speed of capturing things on the fly. All the important function buttons are within easy reach making this easy to use even in pitch dark. The abrupt shutter seems to jerk the camera a bit too much, and it's also loud. This is coming from comparing it to my F4, a 35mm film camera.

Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:

This camera is able to snap pictures where my other DSLRs would start showing noise like the ISO 800 for the D2X(s) or 1250 for the D2H. Having the same sensor as its older D3 brother, this little guy packs some of its own punch as well. I like the smaller body as it is lighter on my back when travelling. I do not care for the dual memory slot and 5:4 composition, and enjoy the sensor cleanup which can be programmed at shut down or startup, and the built-in flash means I can leave my smaller SB400 flash unit home if I wanted too. The D700 is a amazing "little" guy and complements the D3, D2X or D300.

Upgrading from a D70 and well worth it. I've been waiting for a cheaper alternative to the D3 for a while and the D700 shows up. The FX sensor helps a lot in low light and does my 24-70 f2.8 lens justice. Gotta save up for the 14-24 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 now. I would have given it 5 stars but the loud shutter snatched it away. Could be distracting during wedding ceremonies.

This is a great camera and the one to own if you are using Nikon. Full frame is necessary if you want to get the full potential out of your lenses and if you want to get the full Bokah that you can only get with full frame. Of course medium format is better, but it lacks some convenience especially when you are working with quick-moving subjects (I'm talking 2-year-olds here, not race cars). [...]

the D700 is probably the best [$]I've ever spent on photo equipment.I use it for almost any assignment I get..I still use Kodak Pro SLRN's fortethered operation because the Kodak software is so much better thanNikon's Camera Control Pro 2 . The only cons I have are there are buttonsthat can be easily pushed unintentionally resulting in "what's going on?"issues, the built in flash hangs out over the front far enough to limit thefull use of the 24mm pce lens movements and the multi-selector controlon the back can be overly sensitive at times. These are minor issues whenyou consider what this camera can do.

Comments about Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body, FX Format, CMOS Image Sensor:

Going from a D200 to a D700 is remarkable. The D700 shoots the same grain level at ISO-3200 as the D200 shoots at ISO-800. Or put another way, you can shoot 2 stops faster. Or put another way, your f5.6 lenses just became f2.8, or you can shot at the corresponding faster shutter speeds. If you price your current lenses at 2 stops faster, you start to see the $ value. The camera has loads of other image enhancing features that the press has reviewed. Versus the D3, it has on-board flash for easy foreground flash-fill, and the grip (optional) comes off for hiking into remote places.

There are supposedly better "landscapes" cameras - the reviews of the 5D, 5D-II and 1DsMII are very good, but you can get a tripod and get pretty remarkable landscapes from lots of cameras, including the D700. In fact the D700 probably won't need the tripod to do it. But the D700 does things those cameras can never do - take very good low-light and action shots without a tripod. (Great Camera...)
