Comments about sE Electronics GM10 Guitar Microphone - ORIGINALLY $499!! SAVE $100!! WOW!!:
Designed and developed to specifically solve one problem in one application, and it DOES successfully address the issue of how to maintain consistent microphone placement on acoustic guitar while allowing the artist to (literally) 'move with the music'.
I have noticed a definite positive difference in the level of performance by the artists using this microphone. It really does improve their performance when they can move around and be themselves without having to worry about maintaining mic placement or position.
The sound of this mic is very good and quite spacious, especially when considering it is not a big capsule. Directionality is also very good, allowing quite a bit of separation from vocals if the artist is singing while playing. Like all mics, care must be excercised when placing the capsule... it can yield very boomy huge bottom rumbly sounds if distance/direction/angle is not on the mark.
The only issues I have with this mic are minor in that the surfaces of the clamping mechanism that allows attachment to the guitar body do not seem to be perfectly parallel... or, maybe it's the rubber protective pads that are slightly off... in either regard, the clamp will pivot on the guitar body if it is not clamped down with a lot of force. This sometimes gives me concern for the wooden body of the guitar. I know it will most likely be able to take the force but it just seems somewhat unnatural and scary to me to apply such force. The other issue is simply that the threaded fixtures making up the clamp and the adjusting mechanisms seem slightly 'course'. They are not smooth and effortless when turning. I suspect this may change over time as the threaded surfaces get used and/or 'broken in'. Lastly, it is obvious this system won't work on a round-back guitar and I have not tried it on any arch top... that too may presnt a mounting issue.
All in all... this is a worthwhile investment IF you record alot of acoustic guitar. The sound is very very nice, the included carry case is a great feature, the quality of the mic appears to be very good... only time will tell if it holds up and ages gracefully.
