I haven't used the recorder that much, but from the short period of time the recorder is very sensitive and picks up sounds great. Playback through the internal speaker is also better than others I have tried from retail stores.

Comments about Olympus LS-10 Handheld Linear PCM Recorder:

I have been using the LS-10 to record church services and concerts. The display is easy to see. The build quality is very good. The sound quality is very good. The built-in microphones work well. For professional results, an external mic or mics are recommended. Battery life is excellent (this is important). I like the portability and ease of use.

On the down side, there is no mono record mode. Sometimes I do not want stereo in order to reduce the file size.

Comments about Olympus LS-10 Handheld Linear PCM Recorder:

I bought this digital recorder to add audio to PDF photographic portfolios that I produce. I wanted to add behind the camera and behind the computer comments to my portfolios. The sound quality is exactly what was looking for and the ease of operation that the compact design provides is exactly what I was looking for... high quality recordings that are easy to produce. I just carry it in my camera bag and grab it when I point my camera to record those spur of the moment thoughts just before I capture the shot! Just perfect!

Manuel very helpful to setup recording for different field recordings. Does not come with a SD card. Suggest the max of 16GB format.
Recordings needed no cleanup, just normal editing.
The unit is user friendly with no compromise on recording in different formats. I had 4 days of recording aprox 40hours. Results were flawless.

Comments about Olympus LS-10 Handheld Linear PCM Recorder:

I'm not an expert, but the only thing I wish it had was a more variable microphone sensitivity selection. Remember switching between Dolby and Normal on your component tape-deck? The difference between low/high is broad. Very reliable, doesn't have a mind of its own and stays recording until you're done. Low profile, LED record light is selectable to OFF within menu, download through USB was slow but it may be the slow supplied Abes 4gb SD card. I could record the tire tread of cars comming off of the freeway 70ft away, and the sound of my finger touching my jeans at the same time.

Comments about Olympus LS-10 Handheld Linear PCM Recorder:

This is a great field recorder with all the options needed for a hobbyist or working professional. The menu's are easy and the sound is great. The two features that set this apart from comparable recorders is the great battery life and the on-board speaker, which at first seemed chintzy, but has proved incredibly useful. Simple and effective, great piece of gear.

Badly written user manual, Time to learn features

Comments about Olympus LS-10 Handheld Linear PCM Recorder:

take time to really read and understand the manual, then call tech support often if you dont understand anything.

The manual isnt written by a native english speaker, so there are a few places that you have to apply your own english filter to the instructions

Once you get it down, it amazing - mastering quality. MUCH higher the CD audio

Pros
Great for capturing your wedding event audio
Great for recording choirs and other music events.
Great for those who like to record the sounds of nature or a live outdoor performance.
Batteries seem to last a long time 8+ hours.
Supports MP3, WMV as well as PCM
Supports line-in recording but not phantom power.

This is an easy-to-use pocket recorder. As a musician-songwriter, I find this device useful for recording on the go. When an idea pops into my head, this recorder is right there with me. It has great battery life but can also be used with an AC adapter. I have used it to record our band's practice sessions and live performances. The sound quality is excellent. I can transfer files to my Mac and edit the recordings as well. This is an excellent choice for a pocket digital recorder.

Spiffy & bundled software is excellent
By MLVerified Purchaser from Boulder, CO on 10/12/2008
Pros:
Easy To Use, Excellent Sound, Low Distortion, Powerful, Versatile
Cons:
Menu structurenavigation
Best Uses:
Amateur Recording, Events, Field sample collections, Performances, Professional Recording, Soundtracks
Describe Yourself:
Novice
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Olympus LS-10 Handheld Linear PCM Recorder:

I used this to collect field samples for video production, and it was excellent. Also can be used in studio in a variety of ways beyond my ability. Menu navigation/structure is old fashioned; on the other hand it is self explanatory for the most part and easy to use. Very high quality audio. Best part is the bundled Cubase 4le software, which is extremely powerful. It's rare that software is better than the hardware, but in this case both are excellent.
