Comments about Olympus LS11 Linear Stereo 8MB PCM Recorder - Silver:

The LS-11 is a great recorder. Solidly constructed and compact enough to fit in your breast pocket for unobtrusive recording, it has two superb microphones and was able to make high quality recordings even in the most adverse conditions. I recorded talks that I gave, talks that others made in large auditoriums, opera singing in Florence, and interviews of people while walking around a clinic. The recordings were remarkably clear. The automatic sound levels and peak mechanism works well. I was able to hear the conversations and lectures recorded at a distance. At the same time, it really recorded opera and other music reasonably well for a pocket recorder in an audience. My Mac was able to connect to the LS-11 with a USB cord (regular to mini-USB) with the LS-11 turned off (it doesn't require the LS-11 to waste its battery) and see it like a USB plugin device. I could transfer the files and play and edit them on my Mac with no problems at all. The 8 Gb is more than enough to record several hours straight. The battery life (2 AA) is quite good, lasting over 8 hours of continuous use so far.

I have three quibbles. The first is that you cannot change the names of the files from the device (it automatically names them sequential numbers), although you can put the files into different folders. The second is that you can't easily tell how much time you have left to record. The recorder just stopped recording when there was no more space in its memory to hold the files. Third, you have to be careful when you put it into your pocket because you can inadvertently stop its recording. I am sure that there must be work-arounds and I will find ways to compensate for these deficiencies.

Oh, the sound quality from the speaker on the device is tinny. The quality of the sound from the earphones, however, was very good. I recommend this device highly and think that it is well-worth the price. It is something that I will be using for a long time and on many occasions.

Wise,
