I got this for my wife as a Christmas gift (at her request for me to use with grandkids) and though it arrived on Christmas eve, we were able to open it, plug it in, insert the memory card and start taking video. Once the batteries were charged, they seem to have sufficient life for what I have needed so far. The optical zoom is more than adequate and I suspect I will seldom ever need to use the digital zoom. The image stabilizer seems to do well. There are plenty of controls if one wants to really get into that aspect but you can just point and start shooting. The picture quality appears as good as some I have seen on much more expensive and larger cameras of other manufacturers. So far am extremely pleased with it and continue to be impressed with Canon products.

I ordered this camcorder because of the flash memory and its price. Turns out I made a great choice. The flash memory makes everything so much easier than DV tapes. I'm very satisfied with the picture quality, but I haven't owned a camcorder before. Another thing that has come in very handy is the mic jack. Never thought I would use it, but for trying to capture a single person's voice in a crowded room, I got a wireless lapel mic for $50 and the combo works like a charm. Also, this camcorder is tiny! So easy to transport and the 3-hour battery life has been plenty for me. Can't really ask for more.

This is probably the best camcorder you can find for under 300 bucks. Best buy doesnt carry the fs100 in Blue or red, they only have it in silver So blue was a little hard to come by.[...]Its has an amazing zoom and its very compact. the features are extreamly easy to use. if you want a good picture then i would say go with the fs100. If your using it for you tube, the upload from this camcorder is very easy.

I use this camera to record my chalk talks that I use for my web students and for my online courses. I originally used an Aiptek A-HD 720P but didn't like the sound quality. My FS-100 has excellent sound as well as a microphone input so I can use a wireless lapel mic.
The zoom is impressive and I love the remote control that lets me control the camera when I'm doing headshots of for my presentations. Nice not having to rely on having another person behind the camera.
The autofocus and image stablizer are also nice features for a camera in this price range.
