Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 Flash Memory Camcorder:

This takes great video both outdoors and indoors. I had no problems with video quality indoors with the just the lights on in the room. Quality is still excellent. The sound is very good. I am very happy with this video camera and would highly recommend. I displayed it on a Sony 60" Grand Wega and a LG 42" Plasma and people commented how great the video looks. I first tried a Canon SD FS-100 from a different vendor and the indoor quality was horrible. I returned it and purchased the HF-100. Should have bought this one from the beginning.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 Flash Memory Camcorder:

I bought this camera for short burst capturing of my new daughter. The camera is small, comfortable and simple to use. I do not yet have an HD television so I cannot say much about it's high definition qualities, although on my older TV the video is incredibly clear. I would say also that if you want to shoot in full HD at the best quality (FXP) that you get memory cards that have a transfer rate of at least 17Mbs/s. Many SDHC cards out there claim to be for video at class 4 or class 6, but those standards only guarantee minimum transfer rates well below what is needed for FXP which is 17Mbs/s.

I did find out only after purchasing it that editing AVCHD footage is a lot more difficult than HD cameras that may use Hard drives instead due to the compression of the video. Therefore, unless you have a high end computer at home, editing will be very resource draining on your machine and probably very time-consuming for you.

The camera works well, easy to hold with intuitive buttons. The only downside is the software which is basic at best. The .MTS format is still fairly new and most editing software does not accept it. I had to purchase converter software to go from MTS to AVI. Otherwise it is a great camera.

This camera is great for home shooting. The only downside is the battery life of the camera. Doesnt last for much more than an hour.

Overall, great camera.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 Flash Memory Camcorder:

For quick, easy home videos, this is a great camera. I pretty much pulled it out of the box and started taking video.

Bought it based on reviews I read here. Since low battery life was a con, I got the upgraded battery - no problems. Also got the 8 meg memory so it gives me plenty of recording time.

I loaded the software on my 6 - 7 year old laptop. Not too hard to figure out, but the frame rate on playback was inadequate (not the camera's fault - I need a new PC!).

Over all, I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Great little camcorder. I love the HD video quality. The sound is much better than a traditional tape recording camcorder because there are no moving parts, therefore, no background hum. Make sure you pick up a spare battery. I got an after-market 819. Much more convenient than the 809 it comes with. I don't mind not having internal memory. SD cards are super cheap. Would I buy it again? I did after my first one was stolen.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 Flash Memory Camcorder:

I wanted a new video camera but not one that would be outdated anytime soon. Read all the reviews I could and Canon seems to be the most liked by professionals in the "lower cost HD" realm. I love it. I got the HF100 specifically because it does not have a hard drive. A 16GB sd card gives me 2 hours of the highest resolution video. I like xferring from the card instead of having to install software and hook up the device. As SD cards continue to drop memory will become cheaper yet. Best thing? Only moving part is the lens!! Very little to go wrong. Only bad thing is short battery life. I bought a couple of generic 2x capacity batteries with chargers for $60 and am very happy. I have shot a few hours of video and lots of stills and am very happy with this. Low cost for an HD camera. Very small size. Love using SD cards instead of a hard drive. Absolutely happy.

I used it during my recent trip to Paris. Camera was fun to operate and its features came real handy. Night mode was specially awesome as long as you have a steady hand, or take along the tripod. Taking backup was easy on laptop, but I am struggling editing my footage to burn it into good quality DVD as I have recorded all my footage in AVCHD format.

Great camcorder, easy to operate. Set it to maximum FXP quality (17Mbs) and keep default 60i shooting mode, you'll get very nice and smooth HD video. The only downside I have with this camcorder is that it's too light and that's why it's kind of hard to keep it stable in the hand, but it's really a minor complain.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 Flash Memory Camcorder:

This is a lightweight camcorder that screams "carry me and use me!". It's attractive, ergonomically designed and produces excellent video. In fact I was stunned at how good the video was on my Samsung 56" 1080P DLP. I kept looking at how good the video was and how tiny the camcorder is.

It's packed with a lot of features that may be rare for a camcorder in this price range. Features such as a microphone input, hot shoe, optical image stabilization, 12 times optical zoom, HDMI output, etc.

I have a computer on which I use Pinnacle Studio 12 to edit and store videos, so the flash based system is perfect for me. No waiting for realtime video transfers.

The HF100 shoots in AVCHD format which works very well with Studio 12. I thought at first that I was going to have to buy a BluRay burner to burn my videos to disc in HD for play on my Sony BluRay player but then discovered that AVCHD could be edited in Studio 12 and burned to a regular DVD in BRMV (AVC) format (complete with menus and all) and played back in High Definition on my Sony player which supports the AVCHD format. High Definition on a regular DVD! The trade off is in time. Single layer DVDs can hold 35 minutes of HD video. Dual layer can hold 64 minutes. I would say that these playing times are perfectly fine for most home video. This is way cheaper than burning to BluRay. BluRay burners cost about $280.00 and the blanks cost about $20.00 per disc.

I hesitated to give this camcorder 5 stars because nothing is perfect. I've owned a lot of consumer camcorders, and honestly, I couldn't think of any real cons. At least not for the way I use camcorders.

Love recording HD straight to flash and ditching the tapes, can't get enough of it. AVCHD is still a little bleeding edge however, iMovie transfers on the Mac are decent, but Final Cut first transfers to an "intermediary" format that burned 1GB of disk space per minute of HD video. Think we have a ways to go for solid AVCHD support.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 Flash Memory Camcorder:

This is overall a great product if you're looking for an HD camcorder. The pros: it's compact, light, has amazing video quality, and is quite easy to use & I liked the ability to navigate clips in the camera; my safari video looked like it was taken from the Planet Earth series. The cons: the biggest drawback is the battery life (you NEED the extended life battery). I also wasn't crazy about the lack of a non-LCD viewfinder and the lack of Mac-compatible software (you need iLife08 to unpack and edit the AVCHD video format). Definitely one of the best camcorders on the market today.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 Flash Memory Camcorder:

The video (sound & picture) quality is very good for its price tag. I believe it's very difficult for an average person to tell the difference between the video quality of this camera and that of a professional expensive camera.

Having an automatic lens cover means you don't have to worry about losing a lens cover or the added step of taking it off or putting it back on.

Also, having features of a still camera like built-in flash makes it versatile.

Not having a hard drive or mini-DV tape drive inside makes this camera very compact and ready to shoot without waiting for something to spin up to speed.

However, I find these kinds of cameras uncomfortable to hold and use. The camera is just a little bit bigger than a coke can. If you were holding a coke can horizontally as if you were drinking out of it, your thumb would be supporting the can. But with this camera, your thumb would be along the top rim of the can, leaving the rest of your hand to bend its wrist backward just to keep the camera horizontal.

The camera states that a fully charged battery should last an hour during record mode, but it seems like just over half an hour.

I bought this to document my daughter's birth, I have been extremely satisfied by the camcorder's performance and picture quality. The software is easy to use and does what I need it to do EXCEPT for when I have to convert the AVCHD videos to a different format (e.g. youtube compat, mp4 for ipod). If you are a techie type it's no big deal but if you're an average joe it may be a little intimidating to do the conversion.

A 16GB SDHC card gives me 2+ hours of high res video while the standard battery gives me a little more than an hour. Bundled Pixela software is mostly useless; I'm using VideoStudio which is relatively easy to use and handles the AVCHD file format from the camera pretty well.
