I really enjoyed the image quality in HD. But tranferring files to my PC was a nightmare. You should have a minimun speed of 2.3 Mhz!

we got the camera for home videos, to replace an old VHS tape recorder. we used it through the Holidays and got some pretty good videos. I guess like any new camera there is a learning curve to get best results, but we got some good videos right out of the box, with little or no reading the instructions. it can only get better with a little experience, and reading the manual.

works best if plugged in to AC outlet, the battery life is pretty short, maybe an hour on the battery that came with it, and I purchased and extra battery with 4 hours. you are going to need extra bateries, and a way to charge them off the camera, if you plan to take video for more than an hour at a time.

Videos inside with low light seem to be a challenge, consider an additional light source for inside videos.

there is no light to indicate when the camera is recording, we were use to the red light being on when in record mode, there is a remote control to turn the camera on, but no indication if it really came on.

I have not moved any files to the computer or remote storage, so I can not comment on how the software works for the videos off the camera.

I bought this camera to replace my old Canon Gl2. I also own a canon HV1 that I bought a few years ago to shoot HD, but I was never trully happy with the HV1 and continued to use the GL2 even though it was SD. This camera finally replaces everything for me. It's got a decent-size lens with relatively good low-light performance. Everything is configurable and the default settings are pretty good. I've heard some complaints about the on screen menu but to me it is perfect. Almost everything you need is quickly accessible once you learn it. The quality of the video is superb. First thing anyone should do is turn off the 60i mode and put it on 30p to shoot beautiful full 1920x1080 progressive at 30 fps. 24p is good for those who want the film-style motion, but really shouldn't be used by amatures. A major downside is that 2:3 pull down flags are not included in 24p mode which makes it hard to extract the original progressive footage without special software. However, if playing directly on an HDTV this is not an issue since most tv's or blu-ray players will correctly interpret the footage and play back in 24p, so this is only an issue if the footage will be edited on a computer.

the camera looks and feels great. The automatic lens cover is a bit noisy and flimsy when closed. The zoom control could be a bit more sensitive. The picture quality is excellent. The battery life is not too good. I'd definitely recommend an extralife battery pack. The controls are very easy to use and intuitive.

Great camera with a picture quality that amazes every day. Panning need to be done with care to preserve that perfect picture. Included software is very basic re editing but does at least offer smooth playback on the PC, which is not always the case with other programs. In photo mode the still pictures are superb while the still captures from video footage are very good
