-if you purchase accessory battery pack make sure it is a cannon battery. other brands are unrecognizable by the camera, still work just do not show how much battery is left.

This was my first HD camcorder. I use my camcorder almost exclusively for home movies. This camcorder was easy to set-up and use. The "easy" mode is very useful for someone who doesn't want to tinker with a lot of buttons for each video opportunity. The picture quality is outstanding, and the memory provides plenty of storage without having to worry about downloading to a permanent media (i.e. DVD) right away.

Great Picture. Relatively easy to use. Better than Sony in low light conditions.
File storage options and manipulation limited. Apparently have to use Cannon specific software as compatability with other more common video software is problematic. File exporting is slow.

One of the drawbacks to any HD camera is the file sizes in full HD format. To convert these files to be usable in windows is time consuming and system intensive. I use [@] as they have a conversion center to convert these files then I download them to my system. It would be a better cam if the file systems were MP4 or something else. The CAM is very good for the price and I recommend it over the Sony. ABS of Main has been great on delivery and support.

I needed a camcorder for an all-day meeting. The 120GB hard drive in the HG21 will more than suit my needs. It has many useful features, and is not much different operationally from my Canon digital camera (therefore the learning curve was low). Picture quality and ease of use are amazing. I wish it had firewire, but so far the USB has been adequate. It has HDMI and other HD connections, so that's good.

Purchased from Abes for $ 400 less that market prices. Battery life is good as long as dont use VL15 cam light which reduces battery usage by about 50%. VL15 is overpriced, for an over glorified flashlight which supplies poor lighting Menu is simple to use, many option features. Did well in low light condition of church wedding with dimmed lights and candle light ceremony as long as use proper lighting selection option. M2TS video files are not compatible with many video software editing packages if you dont have high definition video editing capabilities. Video files at best recording mode are huge. Transfer time to computer is slow and can take some time using USB port Supplied battery good only for one hour, recommend buying a couple of 4 hour OEM batteries for about half the cost of Canon batteries, supplied by Abes, only drawback Camera will not report charge status, only get charge status with original Canon labeled batteries. 4-hour batteries purchased came with a wall charger convertible to a car charger you can plug into you lighter socket in car. Warning labels on batteries indicate can only be charged by supplied charger. Dont try to charge Canon Battery in anything but the separately purchased Canon charger. Had some issues once connected to Computer via USB PORT ending the connection session, have to shut down pc to kill connection, then switch mode.If you pull the cable video file gets corrupted and when view on screen get big exclamation mark where there should be a recording. Remote works only good to about 5 feet, over that range is intermittant. Remote is affected by GPS cell phones.Picture quality is excellent in natural light highly recommend reading user guide from beginning to end as there are some items if you are not aware of will impact your recording. Though has HDMI capability does not come with an HDMI connect cable supplied in the box. Cable will run you about $30 dollars. Cabling guide is good as long as you are technical adept at reading cabling charts, not meant for a beginner. Recommend using the supplied AC power adapter whenever you can to extend battery life, recharges battery at same time, but slower that separate charger. I use camera for award ceremonies, weddings, vacation movies, presentations, special events,music videos, photo and video montages edited with music. Overall I would rate an 9 out of 10 despite the few issues I have run into. Abes supplies an additional extended warranty program which is about 30% cheaper from other competitive vendors. [...]

Great digi-cam, nice zoom, small and light. Sort of missing a wide angle and a standard video format. Nice to have both HD and SD card for storage, but need software to do a play back on the computer.
