my cousin "panky" is a pro videographer,so when i asked him what camcorder he recomended he was quick to say "vixia hv30 bro". he went on about  its amazing features,and how this perticular camcorder was exactly what i needed according to my lifestyle and the usage i would be giving it, and i must say panky knows his stuff "fo shizil". i wanted a camcorder to record the recent birth of my son, (please, hold your applause and ahhhs till later), and other important moments of my life and i must say, the quality of the picture from the hv30 is as panky said "amazing". i am 100% satisfied with this purchase and would absolutly recomend the hv30 to anyone looking for a great camcorder. thanks panky, your the man. okay, applause and ahhhhs.

As a semi-pro photographer I've always been a "Canon guy", so after some research I decided to go for Canon for video too. And I don't regret a second. Compare to my old Sony camcorder it's like night and day.
My only disappointment was that such a giant as Canon could have included some $20 firewire cable in the box as well as simple HD editing/capturing software to start with instead of a bundle of still photo programs which are pretty much useless with HV30 photo ability.

Takes great HD video in the light but not as great in darker areas, still a nice picture but not as great as when done on better lighting. The sound is good but I expexted a little better quality for an HD recording.

I have to admit: this is my first video camera, so I can't compare it to anything else. But so far it's been great! The picture quality is great and the camera is easy to use. I have to say I've been carrying the camera everywhere and it's also pretty hardy.

I've always used Panasonic video cameras and have been extremely happy with them, but thought it time to branch out to HD; although the HD Canon picture quality is obviously superior,I'm disappointed with the useless joy stick (Panasonic joysticks do about everything) and the inability of the camera to rewind in playback mode for on-the-spot erasing of unwanted footage.

Picture quality is nearly as good as my 3ccd Canon GL2's. Compact size is a plus in outdoor videography. Nice comfortable manual focus wheel. Sound quality is good with minimal camera motor noise. This can be easily removed using a Canon DM-50 mic. The DM-50 is easy to use thanks to the hot shoe atop the HV-30. Simply slide it on and shoot. Battery life isn't very long, about 30-40 minutes with the standard battery. You'll want a couple extras in your bag. You will also want to buy a charger since the only way to charge the battery on the HV-30 is attached to the camera. Overall, I give it an 8 on a 10 scale.

We absolutely love it! It is easy to start using. Some of the features are difficult to figure out. We still haven't mastered how to fade in and out (the manual is not clear). Besides that, it is pretty intuitive.

This is my 1st camcorder( I usually shoot with a DSLR or edit someone elses video tapes ). I have used it for about a month. Great image quality, even the stills. Many features for advanced users and creative control ,several options for connectivity. Items that could be improved, the dioptric slider, your finger is on the slider which is right on the viewfinder...you can't see thru your finger! The view finder isn't very clear or big. I usually use the lcd screen, which is pretty good. The joystick feels alittle flimsy...and it's used alot. Since I haven't owned or used a camcorder before...I have no comparisons. I also haven't used this camcorder in all conditions yet or have had it for a long time. I have a HD TV...which for now is the only way to view the HD videos. Until they come out with reasonabily priced high def DVD recorders, you can take HD video and output it as standard def (option in camcorder)to current DVD recorders. I wanted a mini-dv tape camcorder so I can edit my videos on my computer. Take out boring sections...add music, etc.
For now I am very happy with the Canon HV30 and put my trust in the Canon name for durability.
I decided on the Canon Vixia HV30 based on many positive reviews. I did not give it a 5 star, because it's not perfect...and the negatives aren't that bad. Very nice little machine for a casual user , video quality and features good enough for a pro.

I own Canon HV-20 and download my video to iMovie on my iMac. Purchased HV-30 for my son. Mini DV's are great way to save HD video for future use when they can economically be burned in HD. This is the best priced quality HD camera I know of. Picture quality is great. My experience with Abe's could not have been better.

This baby gives super high quality video and is super portable. I travel a lot and it's always an issue bringing a camera with you so the smaller the better.

I have a Mac so mini DV was the best medium for me. It is easy to edit, very good video quality.in fact, i owed a panasonic mini dv PV-GS320 before and image quality is better with this camera.
this Canon doesn't have lots of cool features but is good for point and shoot films. cons? price, flash/light, poor/average batery life, no connecting to outlet for editing and viewing on tv

I use this product for filming weddings, the picture I recieved from my last wedding was Superb! I am excited to use this camera for years to come.

A few things that I hate about this camera is the focus dial instead of the ring, but that is okay to live with. Another thing is the horriable audio from the built in camera microphone, (that is why you upgrade to an external microphone which is what I did.)

But all in all for the beginning Professional Videographer, This camera is an excellent camera to start out with, With all of it's Professional like features.

The image quality is outstanding. I seriously love the look of the footage. Sound quality is pretty lame, so I would recommend an external mic. Manual focus is a pain on this camera, but it's not a deal breaker. Overall, I am thrilled with this purchase.

I bought this camera as it had a full-HD sensor (1920x1080). I would have never suspected that Canon went to such a disgusting tactic as to mislead people by putting a full-HD sensor in a camera that cannot record full-HD. So you think you have a full-HD camera but it just happens that the mini-DV recording scheme does not allow higher resolution than 1440x1080 to be recorded. To summarize, Canon advertises this camera as having a full-HD sensor (and it does) but what they don't say is that the full-HD sensor is useless as the camera cannot record in full-HD.
