If you want to create Hi Def DVDs in either the AVC-HD or Blu-Ray format, you will need a Blu-Ray player to play them. However, you can play directly from the camcorder to a HD TV as well as play backed up files from a PC to a TV using component cables. Also, if you get an extra battery, you should get a JVC one. This model must have a chip in it that prevents off brand ones from working, which was not the case for earlier models.
