Great camera overall with 1080/60p, but you must have computer software that can handle it. Playback on Windows Media Player is jumpy and not steady. Included HD Writer software is not that great.

I chose this camera for picture quality, and have not been diaappointed. The color saturation and level of detail is extraordinary. The large onboard and SDXC storage, coupled with long battery life, make long recording sessions worry-free. Image stabilization is excellent, I find that I have to make camera moves a little faster to convince the stabilizer that a move is intentional, so a pan or tilt does not jump start.
The complexity of controls and adjustments can be daunting, but the automatic settings do a good job in most normal situations. Some of the features, such as face detection and identification, and smile detection, seem rather silly, and geared to simplistic photography. But these can be ignored or turned off. I find one simple feature, drawing an open grid of alignment lines on the view display, very useful for composing and aligning shots, as well as monitoring my hand movement.
The manual controls for focus, white balance, shutter speed and iris take some getting used to. The adjustment ring circling the lens can make all these adjustments plus zoom, but switching between them is a little awkward and will cause some camera shake. So using the camera at its full potential takes practice, mostly deciding how to control the shot before recording.
The sound quality is very good, and the mikes are plenty sensitive; I notice a low-level whirr noise in very quiet shots, however. Again, if there is any ambianet sound, this noise diappears as the audio gain adjusts.
For casual video or still recording, the automatic settings are more than sufficient, and the results very high quality. With practice, the manual settings allow extra creativity and video in otherwise difficult situations. This camera will not stand in the way of excellent photography.

This camera tend is really awesome for the price. It dropped price by 200 dollars from MSRP while the Sony didn't so that was one major deciding factor. Manual mode is great, as in low light you can actually drop frame rate to 30 in 60p mode for even better low light shooting. Got this camera, and in couple days video taped my uncle's wedding and i was impressed.
Things that i like about this camera. Pros:
1) Stabilization is amazing
2) Small lens hood that came with it.
3) Smooth Zoom, no jumpy zoom. (Sony jumps if you press it a bit more than needed)
4) Good sound
5) Easy menu navigation (Sony has to browse page after page to find what you need
6) Light weight, compact
7) Opening LCD will turn on camera instantly, closing it will turn it off, no more forgetting to power off like with DV tape cams.
8) Playback is incredibly responsive to fast forward, stop/play thanks to digital memory.
Now the cons:
1) It doesn't focus on things that are let's say 2-3 feet away if you start zooming past 3x. For example macro shots of flowers. Sony CX550v had no problem with that.
2) Video is more grainy and less sensitive in low light than Sony, even though the pro review said otherwise
3) I don't like location of the record button and how a battery is in the way of the thumb if you place it on record button. If i get a bigger battery it will be completely uncomfortable to press record button and i have medium hands.
4) 32Gb of internal memory is so little when shooting 1080 60p. Sony has 64Gb of internal memory.
5) While stabilization is a lifesaver, video gets real jumpy when you pan just a bit faster than acceptable, really have to watch panning.

The camcorder captures fantasic videos in all conditions I used it (Indoor dance performances, outside sports, and sight seeing). The zoom is smooth and stabilization fantastic. Its the best of a long string of camcorders I own ( including canon, sony HD cams). My only quibbles are having to remove the battery to plug in the AC power, and I can't seem to find a long life battery for this model.

So far have not found anything bad about the camera. I am a casual user and not too finicky. The HD results are excellent which is what I bought the camera for anyway. I connected the camera to my HDTV (a Samsung 55" LED LCD) and the video quality was breathtaking and looked very natural.
The Still photo results are not great. But again, I did not concentrate on the still results.

The camcorder is only the 1st step to having something nice to watch. This one provides some really GOOD source. Stabilization (OIS) is outstanding even with my shaky hands. The 3mos sensors make for very nice color in lower light situations. The automatic setting nicely handles most of the shooting I've done so far.
The slight fan noise when using the internal 5.1 mics and AGC can be irritating, so if you plan to do low level audio with it, I'd figure on using an external mic.
I upgraded my VideoStudio X2 to X3 and odd video quality issues disappeared - It wasn't the fault of the camcorder at all. Both X2 and X3 can read the camcorder's native MTS files directly, but X3 has fewer bugs.

Out of the box, the camera was extremely easy to use. I've used this camera on the boat and on a small plane. On both, the image stabilization was fantastic. Picture quality when recording at 1080/60p is incredible - You wont be disappointed! Even at the lower quality setting, picture is great. Be aware that most video editing software will not be able to handle the 1080/60 video. Also, as a reminder, you will not be able to create High Definition DVD without the appropriate burner.

The picture quality is unreal at 1080p. However, if you pan too fast, the camera can't keep up. Probably the biggest complaint is the included battery. At highest quality, it records for only 1hr,40 min. The onboard memory is an hour longer. Also, the memory is formatted in FAT 32, meaning a clip over 22 min at max quality gets split into multiple files, due to the 4 GB limitation. Other than that, this camera is definitely a must buy. I just wish Abe's had the 240 gig hard drive version.

Great concept camera, the problem is this AVCHD codec. By the time you process it (if you even can process it), it ends up looking no better than my HD TX1.

After owning ten video cameras beginning about 15 years ago, I love this new Panasonic. It sets a new incredible standard for video quality and usability.
It's ease of use makes good video and pictures better. In OIS-2 mode, I put the camera atop the steering wheel in my truck and got super smooth video driving along. Face recognition software makes it easy to get the faces in good focus and exposure, In intelligent auto mode, you touch the item on the screen that you want the camera to focus on, and if you move the camera it still keeps track of the item. A back lighting compensation feature gives you one exposure for the objects in the foreground and another exposure for the back lit area so both are in good exposure.
The 3" lcd gives good detail, and the lens is a wide angle 35mm that allows easier shooting of close up indoor groups unlike most other video cams.
Low light performance is good. Multiple onboard microphones and four different sound recording modes including 5.1 surround.
The still picture 14.2 mp quality is also better than any point and shoot I have ever had, though perhaps not quite as good as a digital slr.
The camera has the cutting edge capability of taking video at 1080 60p. However, there is no way to make a dvd that utilizes the 60p format.
Some users have reported that the camera cooling fan can be heard in the background in very quiet scenes in some audio modes.
From my perspective, almost no matter what a person's intended use, if can afford it, this is the camera to buy.

Overall this camcorder performs very well and everyone says the touch screen features sucks. I think the touch screen feature is easy to use ,although quick button would make it so much better. Still images could be better although it is good enough to snap a quick picture of a none moving object.

I was about to purchase the Canon Flag ship CAMCORDER but in Japan they ranked this one number one and the canon number two. This one was cheaper in cost and works great. They mentioned that the fan makes the sound quality bad but so far I have not issue with fan noise.
