Comments about SONY HDR-TG1 HD Camcorder:

Others have said the touch-screen menus are difficult to use, I say nonsense. I fully expected a difficult maze of options but in the end didn't even need the manual to navigate to the necessary features. Yes, it's possible the menus could be streamlined and made more intuitive, but I see this as a potential tweak rather than a needed overhaul.

The HD video is AMAZING, and I verified the 5.1 surround sound records accurately (or as accurately as possible considering centralized mic placement. I did notice the LFE channel didn't seem to have much (if any) data on it. But it's possible the camera wasn't picking up lower frequencies to record.

I recommend buying the 16G memory card ASAP. You'll be glad for the add'l recording time.

All in all a great purchase!

Comments about SONY HDR-TG1 HD Camcorder:

Video quality is comparable to Blu-Ray DVD movies when recording in full HD mode + 5.1 channel sound is amazing for this little camcorder. Very convinient to use: controlled with one thumb, quickly turns on when you open the touch screen, one touch DVD burn is great, fits in your pocket. Cons: still images could be better (my 6 mega pixel camera makes better pictures), video quality drops a lot in low light conditions.

Comments about SONY HDR-TG1 HD Camcorder:

I also have a Sony HD HDV camcorder (produces arguably better quality HD), but this one beats it hands down in most practical aspects. My main objective was to make home videos of my 18m old, and the good news the HDR-TG1 is compact enough for me to actually carry around.
I use iMovie 8 to import and encode the footage.
