This is my 3rd digital camcorder.

This camcorder is not meant in any way for Semi-pro or pro users. Having said that this is great cam for personal / home / vacation use.

One of the cons is that lots of controls are available only through touch screen, which is not very comfortable. Also if you have to quickly switch between different modes, it could be a daunting task.

The other thing which I didn't like was that battery pack supplied is good only for 40Mins of HD recording. So you need to upgrade your battery.

Also I would have loved to see a mini HDMI cable supplied with the package. (For some reason no-one supplies HDMI cables with the equipment).

Also I do have some problems with the auto-focus in low light conditions. Specially when you move the camera. Infact I had difficult time focussing when I move from one scene to the other quickly in continuous recording mode in good light also.

On the plus side, this camcorder has great features. I have not seen so many features available at this price. Quality of 10.8 MP stills is quite good. ( Though not genuine 10.8 MP but interpolated resolution). Again if you are a casual photographer, you can probably replace your still digital camera. I would probably stick with my Canon SLR for the stills.

Remote is very handy specially in playback mode. And despite all negative reviews about the sound, I think sound recording is quite good for a handycam.

I am not greatly impressed by this, but I am not dis-appointed either. I would probably rank it above average camcorder.

I took it with me for a travel and I documentary the trip using short and long films. I normally carry my HD Photo camera with me but if you are in a middle of a situation where filming and at the same time, you likes to record a beatiful image this product is ideal because of its versatility. Just one switch and you are taking pics or you have the choice to review your movie and select the scene you like to have it and make a photo of it. Nothing like hands on it. Once you use it you figure out how many ways you have to improvise and play with its feature.

I read reviews that said focus is slow, picture color is not great, sound is poor outdoors, and taking photos while recording is terrible, they said buy the comparable JVC instead, it is much better overall. I have quite a bit of Sony product and have never been let down in the past, so I figured they were just overcritical reviews. They were NOT. Learning how to use this camcorder is easy for the beginner yet it is intricate enough to meet the more demanding needs of an accomplished Videographer. My first trip was to Hawaii and my videos all turned out wonderful. I'll get better but the 'face finder' and other quality features helped make this a perfect purchase. Purchase a small strap that goes around your neck so the camcorder hangs in front for easy access.

You need a spare battery because the one included is inadequate for my daily taping on a trip. Sony makes 2 batteries that last longer than the one they do include. They should give everybody their longest lasting, not close to their worst. In low light picture is a little grainy but in daylight WOW !!!. The HD picture in daylight on my HD TV is absolutely incredible. Now if I can only find the right editing program for the AVCHD format to edit and burn a DVD to play in my Sony BluRay player to keep it in HD and looking perfect. The camera is nice and compact and feels good in my hand while shooting. With the camera's hard drive I love not having to use tapes anymore also.

Jumping into High Def video recording in itself after having the MiniDV for so long, is a great upgrade...but getting this Sony is definately a step up. A lot of people do not understand or do NOT know that, YES! it IS possible to transfer the hidef video files from the camcorder onto a standard DVD disc...I asked this question to 3 major electronics stores that I went to: "Can I put the hidef videos from this sony HDRSR11 onto a standard DVD disc?" ALL 3 stores' employees said "NO"...you can only put them on Blu Ray discs, those are the HIDEF discs that support the new HIDEF format"...either they don't know or they definately wanted me to buy the 25.00 blank Blu Ray discs, because no store carries a set-top blu-ray burner...you can only burn Blu-Rays with a PC that has a Blu Ray burner drive. The software that comes with the camcorder allows you to burn your HiDef movies onto a standard DVD with the AVCHD format...even a standard DVD burner allows you to do this, you DO NOT need a Blu Ray Burner drive. The only sad thing is that you wont be able to watch it UNLESS you have a Blu Ray drive...funny: your standard DVD burner drive can record the AVCHD format, but will not play it back...only Blu Ray drives are able to play the AVCHD DVD formatted movie from this Sony camcorder. Once you get the hang of the on screen touch panel menu, you'll be ok...a lot of people don't like the touch panel feature on these camcorders...play with it, and within 30 minutes you'll familiarize yourself with the incredible array of features this camocordere has to offer. I thought that technology had caught up with the low-light focus problems of most any camcorder...this one is not the exception: in low light it loses focus rather quickly and dark areas of the scene turn VERY grainy...so for low light indoor shooting, you better bring some BIG lighting along, because this camcorder does NOT have light. The battery drains very quickly as well: you can count on getting about 1/4 or less of whatever shows up on the lcd screen for battery life. In outdoor shooting, you will be amazed on the super hidef quality of your videos. Another great thing is the speed which the files are transferred to your PC: incredibly fast! This unit only has USB, so it's amazing it can do it so fast...this unit does not have fire wire IEEE1394 for transferring. For other connectivity, comes with a component output for connecting to HDTV's...you don't need a mini HDMI (which is NOT included). Another great thing is the speed in which the Sony software transfers and records to DVD discs: my test video was 21 minutes...the software transferred and recorded my DVD in less than 13 minutes! Big difference from transferring from MiniDV (1 hour to transfer the tape) and 40-60 minutes to record. This camcordeer cannot be used as a webcam via usb streaming...I was told by Sony support that the only way you might be able to use it as a webcam, is using the AV outlet on the camcorder and pliug it into your video card (if you have one that supports analaog AV-in).
Other than that, this is a great camcorder/camera for the price. I sold my camera and MiniDV and got this one that does both. Camera files are interpolated to 10.2MP...the quality is superb: great detail, vibrant colors. Think of it: a good 10MP camera is around 400-500 and another 500 for a HD camcorder...just get this one and save a bundle, plus, no swapping between camcorder and camera.

I have owned this camcorder for three weeks, previous camcorder was a Cannon ZR40. To date I have used the SR11 camcorder for home movies, ice skating events and some outdoor events. Being able to take photos while recording video is a neat feature but hard to master unless you are using a tripod and the remote control. The included software only allows you to preview HD clips that reside on the camera not on your PC. The OIS works very well, eliminating most unwanted movement without reducing image quality. A really versital item is the camera control knob located under the lens. You can select which function is controlled by this knob and can turn the manual feature on/off by depressing the center of the knob. I have used it for focus when shooting through glass windows and for white balance for shooting scenes on ice. One thing I have discovered is that HD recording does not lend itself well to fast action shots or large camera movements, typically resulting in bluring. I have not played the videos on a monitor capable of 1080i so I am not sure of the quality at that level but it looks great on a 720i monitor. Photo quality is good but so far my 8 mega pixel camera does produce a better picture.

I'm in now way a professional filmer but I can say that this camera is great. It is great for home movies or travelling as it is small but films a great picture, and takes them too. The mic picks up good sound and the zoom mic works well also. The touch screen is very large and very responsive.

It has many great features including the Smooth-Slo Record which can take 3 seconds of video recorded at 240 fps and slow it down to 12 seconds of video. Other good features include the manual zoom knob, and 60GB HDD. It can hold plenty of film and it can be accessed very easily.

The drawback are the codec in which it is imported to your computer with. It uses .m2ts or .mts, also known as AVCHD, files which aren't largely supported except for mainly Sony Vegas 8.0 and newer.
It also does not record in low light situations well. When there is not enough light it becomes grainy very easily and can be difficult for it to focus.

Got this camera for my soon to be first kid. Camera is easy to use once you understand the operation. I don't like the touch screen LCD - would prefer a remote or similar type of click interface. Upgraded the software to Vegas Pro to get the HD capabilities - software is easy to use to just download and compile movies. It's pretty complex to do more interactive type of features, need to play around with that more. Otherwise, it's a great camera and I'm happy.

I had no problem with the battery life, I purchased an extra battery and never used it. we just came back from 8 days at Disney World and I made sure that I charged the battery each night. Right out of the box you can start recording and not have a worry about what your doing...you can learn all the extras when you have time...the snapshots are crisp and awesome...wasnt going to go with a touchscreen but glad i did...makes things a whole lot easier...once you get used to what all the icons mean it just keeps on getting easier to use...and if you purchase the Sony MCD-5 HD DVD recorder movies and pics are easy to record with one touch button...no computer needed...so you can archive and delete them asap...the only downfall is that it didn't come with a mini HDMI cable to directly plug into you TV...and the darker the situation the grainier the video under normal household lighting...but not a big deal since it can be corrected with a push of a button or a flash/light attachment when you learn how and when to use it. With a memory stick pro duo you can just put you pics on there and plug and print ...Get rid of that old 2mp digital camera...This camcorder does it all...Two cameras in one! No need for the high end new digital cameras that do video too...think about it...do you really need to drag two cameras with you on vacation??? Nope!

I only used it for two days and I love it so far. All of the cons that people put down can be fixed! There is poor battery life but just get an extra battery and the rapid charger that is provided...its great.
As for the zoom get an upgraded lens.

The camera itself packs a lot in one little package. The LCD is nice and large and is very crisp. Being a Mac owner, I was disappointed with the fact that because I own a G5 (no Intel processor), that I cannot tape/import/edit in HD. Also, I needed to upgrade it iLife 08 so I could edit in iMovie 08 (which changed functionality from the previous version). So I get all the great HD capabilities but cannot use them until I get a new Mac processor. The menus seem a little clunky, with the majority being accessed from the touch-screen LCD. Video quality is nice, have not used enough to assess audio but it is not rated highly as I've read.

Nifty camera, great for hobbyist or home movie buff. Like any camera, produces nice pictures in the proper light. Low light is a bit grainy but acceptable. It even has a feature that boosts the color in low light giving picture a bit more life. AVCHD format a bit sketchy but I'm sure support by the editor makers is imminent. I bought this for use as lockdown 2nd cam at events, and this has better manual ctrls than the Canon & better I/O placement than the Panasonic. I would have purchased the Panny except you can't use the battery & send signal to other devices at the same time since the battery covers them. The Panny has a nicer manual focus. Picture stabilization works quite well on the Sony. If you're looking for a quality camera with a lot of pro features this is a good choice. Makes good still pics even while recording video. 12x optical zoom is how they all should come. The touch screen takes some getting used to & has potential for getting smudged up easily. Having a mic input is great but it would be better if there were actual meters instead of an unquantified "low/standard" switch. The manual dial works ok, not like a real lens focus but the trade-off is acceptable & you can assign it to different functions, though only one at a time. The outputs are in good locations & it will simultaneously output component & HDMI. This is also one of few cameras that has separate mic input and headphone jack. Beware this does not use CF flash cards, rather it uses Memory sticks - very pricey in comparison; you can get 2 CF cards for price of one memory stick pro duo, and that alone could be the deal breaker between the HDR-SR11 and another brand with similar features.

After doing alot of research I found that this HDVR was rated one of top buys many different review sources.
I would have to agree that this is a phenominal piece of equipment no matter what you use it for. It covers all of the bases no matter the need and it's easy to use.
Also, I've coupled this unit with the 37mm High Grade 1.7X Telephoto Lens VCL-HG1737C and Wow you can reach out there. At a 1000yds you can see things with exceptional clarity. At this range you have to use a tripod, but how cool.
I do alot of hunting and fishing and this is one of my favorate tools in my arsenal. No Cons, other than in windy conditions the audio sounds pretty bad.

I researched HD camcorders for about a month before settling on this model. I went to a local retailer and got a true feel of several models and had narrowed it down to this and Canon. I own an Optura Pi, so I was partial to Canon since it has been a great camcorder for about 5 years. Having just bought an HDTV, it was time to make the move to HD movies. I chose the Sony because of the larger 3.2" display, flawless video performance for home movies, viewfinder, and a more durable feel overall. Cons include just average battery life, slightly complicated menu navigation, and proprietary memory (Sony memory stick pro duo) which is more expensive than SD memory. I would recommend this camcorder to anyone looking to take the plunge into HD.

This is probably the best camcorder if you want to record HD. Battery life could be longer but if you are a casual user like then it wont matter. I am not impressed with the touch screen interface since overtime the screen tends to get dirty.
Another possible con is that this is a little bulky compared to the others in the market. But the PIC quality is great and I live the camera feature.

As an average user of "high tech" devices, I'm impressed with the quality and advanced features. I found the instructional user's manual very complicated and for advanced users. I wish manufacturers of cameras, cell phones, camcorders and similar neat devices would hire a down-to-earth person to write or edit manuals and make them simple. On the other hand, if you want to find some specific solution, it's hiding somewhere in the manual. I highly recommend the 60GB sweetheart of a camcorder. To make my point, understand I ONLY buy SONY because they make the best and most reliable devices. I bought this camera to use with my Mac and it integrates perfectly with iMovie. The 2 things that I don't like are 1) the controls are hard to reach when the camera is secure in my hand...it's small 2) taking stills while video recording seems to take a very long time. It needs about 5-10 seconds to record a still while recording video at the same time. Other than that, I love it.

I have used video cameras since 86. This is by far the best and least expensive of the bunch. I also have the Sony underwater housing which works great while snorkeling.
